Our Story

Utopia was born from the need to create a different space where children and young people could learn through art. We were not looking to form future artists, but to develop sensitive minds, capable of thinking critically and appreciating art in all its forms.

In 1998, the Multiart Workshops were born, intensive workshops of art, circus, and theater, where we integrated music, dance, and other artistic branches. They emerged due to the lack of a summer program truly focused on the arts.

As a young mother and with vast experience in camps, Saudi Morales dreamed of creating that unique space. A place of inclusive creation, where her child would want to go every day with the excitement that only art can provide. A safe space, full of magic, where, as an educator, artist, and mother, she would also want to be.

In 2006, with the arrival of their third child, Utopia: The Arts Camp was born. Our first headquarters was the Museum of Art and History of San Juan, sponsored by Don Ricardo Alegría and Rafael Tufiño.

Today, after 37 years working in camps—as a leader, counselor, teacher, director, and founder—Saudi can say that thousands of children, young people, and adults have been part of Utopia. Every day they wake up with the excitement of creating alongside artists, creative children, and dreaming adults.

On the occasion of our 20th anniversary, we continue to firmly believe that when reality becomes difficult or stops working, we must dare to seek our own utopias.

Utopía nace de la necesidad de crear un espacio diferente donde la niñez y los jóvenes pudieran aprender a través del arte. No buscábamos formar futuros artistas, sino desarrollar mentes sensibles, capaces de pensar críticamente y apreciar el arte en todas sus formas.

En el 1998 nacen los Multiart Workshops, talleres intensivos de arte, circo y teatro, donde integrábamos la música, el baile y otras vertientes artísticas. Surgieron ante la falta de un programa veraniego verdaderamente enfocado en las artes.

Como joven madre, y con vasta experiencia en campamentos, Saudi Morales soñó con crear ese espacio único. Un lugar de creación inclusivo, donde su hijo quisiera ir cada día con la ilusión que solo el arte puede brindar. Un espacio seguro, lleno de magia, donde como educadora, artista y madre, ella también quisiera estar.

En el 2006, con la llegada de su tercer hijo, nace Utopía: El Campamento de las Artes. Nuestra primera sede fue el Museo de Arte e Historia de San Juan, apadrinados por Don Ricardo Alegría y Rafael Tufiño.

Hoy, tras 37 años trabajando en campamentos —como líder, consejera, maestra, directora y fundadora— Saudi puede decir que miles de niños, jóvenes y adultos han sido parte de Utopía. Cada día despiertan con la ilusión de crear junto a artistas, niños creadores y adultos soñadores.

​En la conmemoración de nuestros 20 años, seguimos creyendo firmemente que cuando la realidad se vuelve difícil o deja de funcionar, debemos atrevernos a buscar nuestras propias utopías.
